Collagen supplements: do they work for skin and joints?

For skin, it depends on who paid for the study. A 2021 review found 90 days of hydrolysed collagen reduced wrinkles and improved skin elasticity and hydration [1]. A 2025 review of 23 trials found that trials not funded by companies showed no effect on hydration, elasticity or wrinkles, while company-funded ones did, and concluded there's currently no clinical evidence to support collagen for preventing or treating skin ageing [2].

For osteoarthritis, overall symptom scores improved, but the pain and function parts of the score, taken alone, didn't change significantly [4].

Skin

ReviewWhat it found
2021, 19 studies, 1,125 people [1]90 days of hydrolysed collagen reduced wrinkles and improved elasticity and hydration
2025, 23 trials, 1,474 people [2]No effect in trials without company funding; an effect in company-funded ones

95% of the people in the 2021 review were women [1].

Fish, beef or other collagen?

In a 2023 review, 14 trials used fish collagen, one used beef, one chicken, two pork, and nine didn't say [3]. It found no significant difference between sources for skin elasticity, found fish best for skin hydration, and flagged several biases in the trials [3]. With only one trial of beef collagen, the comparison is weak. Collagen can come from pork, so if that matters to you, check the source on the label.

Joints

A review of trials in osteoarthritis found collagen improved overall symptom scores (the total WOMAC index and a visual pain scale), but WOMAC's pain and function sub-scores on their own showed no significant difference [4].

The Saudi limit

Saudi Arabia's Food and Drug Authority classes collagen products, which may contain vitamins and minerals, as food, with a maximum daily amount of 10 g [5].
