Biotin for hair: does it work?

Probably not, unless you're deficient, which is rare [4][5]. The claims that biotin helps hair rest only on case reports, all in children [1].

High doses can do harm another way: they can make lab tests for thyroid hormones, vitamin D and the heart-attack marker troponin read falsely normal or abnormal [1][2]. Saudi Arabia's health ministry says to get a blood test before taking a supplement for hair growth [3].

The evidence for hair

How much is in the pills

Adults need about 0.03 mg (30 micrograms) of biotin a day, but many supplements contain 20 mg, and some up to 100 mg a pill, with advice to take several a day [2]. EFSA found too little data to set an upper limit [6].

Why it matters for blood tests

Very high biotin intakes can interfere with lab tests that use biotin, including tests for thyroid hormones and vitamin D, giving falsely normal or abnormal results [1]. Even a single 10 mg dose has interfered with thyroid tests done within 24 hours [1]. The US FDA reported that one patient taking high doses of biotin died after a falsely low troponin result, a test used to diagnose heart attacks [2], and it's not known how many hours without biotin are enough before a test [2]. Tell your doctor and the lab if you take biotin.

What else causes hair loss

Saudi Arabia's health ministry lists deficiencies of biotin, iron, protein and zinc among the causes, and advises a blood test before taking a supplement for hair growth [3]. If a test shows low zinc, note that the upper limit for adults is 40 mg a day, and 50 mg or more for weeks can block copper absorption [7].

Voltra tracks the protein you eat on the Eat tab. Log a hair supplement there too, so your doctor can see what you take.

Frequently asked

Does biotin help hair grow?

Only case reports in children support it. Unless you're deficient, which is rare, there's no good evidence it helps.

Can biotin affect blood tests?

Yes. High doses can make thyroid, vitamin D and troponin tests read falsely normal or abnormal; even 10 mg has affected thyroid tests within 24 hours.

What should I check before taking hair vitamins?

Saudi Arabia's health ministry advises a blood test first; deficiencies of iron, protein, zinc and biotin are among the causes of hair loss it lists.

How much biotin do adults need?

About 0.03 mg (30 micrograms) a day. Many supplements contain 20 mg or more.
