Vine leaves with meat have about 102 kcal per 100 g, with 4.4 g of protein; vine leaves in oil without meat have 122; stuffed cabbage 75 and stuffed zucchini 86, in Bahrain's food composition table [1]. A 250 g plate of vine leaves with meat comes to about 255 kcal and 11 g of protein (calculated).
Per 100 g, mahshi has fewer calories than most rice dishes, as long as it isn't cooked in a lot of oil.
Per 100 g
| Dish | kcal | Protein | Fat | Carbs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vine leaves with meat [1] | 102 | 4.4 g | 1.5 g | 17.7 g |
| Vine leaves in oil (no meat) [1] | 122 | 3.7 g | 2.1 g | — |
| Stuffed cabbage [1] | 75 | 3.8 g | 1.3 g | 12.1 g |
| Stuffed zucchini [1] | 86.4 | 4.9 g | 1.5 g | 14.7 g |

A plate
For vine leaves with meat, from a few rolls to a full plate:
| Amount | kcal | Protein |
|---|---|---|
| 100 g | ≈ 102 | ≈ 4.4 g |
| 250 g | ≈ 255 | ≈ 11 g |
| 400 g | ≈ 408 | ≈ 17.6 g |
Calculated from the per-100 g figures [1].
What changes the number
- Oil and ghee. Mahshi cooked with more oil or ghee than usual has more calories than these figures; a tablespoon of oil, about 14 g, adds about 120 kcal (calculated).
- Rice or meat. Most of the calories here are the rice in the filling [1]. More meat adds protein; more rice adds carbohydrate.
- What's served with it. Yoghurt, the cooking broth and bread all add to the plate.
